AMERICAN THEATER | PlayCo’s 2021 residency culminates with online presentations

NEW YORK CITY: Over the past two weeks, the Play Company (PlayCo) presented the highlight events of his 2021 Residence for the Black Women Theater Makers, with a group panel and individual presentations. The public, free, online events, which started on September 17 and will continue with another session tomorrow, September 30, give resident artists the opportunity to adapt their work after presenting it to an audience. The artists involved are playwright and director Daaimah Mubashshir; academic, playwright and portrait painter Zainabu Jallo; Katlego Kai Kolanyane-Kesupile, award-winning interdisciplinary artist born in Botswana, activist and founding director of the Queer Shorts Showcase Festival; and Brazilian playwright, screenwriter, actress and curator Dione Carlos.

The residency program launched earlier this year, aimed at providing financial support, development and connection with other artists and Playcolocal and international networks of. Selected through an invitation to apply process in collaboration with curatorial consultant Kathy Perkins, artists receive a stipend of $ 8,000 and a project budget of $ 4,500. The residency included a virtual meeting every two weeks and frequent communication with the artistic team of PlayCo. PlayCo also organized other interactions, such as coffee dates, group meetings, training sessions, Q&A, feedback sessions, etc.

Carlos is a Brazilian playwright, screenwriter, actress and curator who has directed 17 plays nationally and internationally in countries such as Mexico, Colombia, Belgium and Portugal. Zainabu Jallo’s academic and creative work has been created through scholarships from the Sundance Theater Institute, Institute for World Literature, Harvard University, Harvard’s Mellon School of Theater and Performance (Migrations session), of the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin, of the ResidenzTheater Munich, Château de Lavigny, Maison des Ecrivains in Switzerland. Katlego Kai Kolanyane-Kesupile is an international award-winning cultural architect, development practitioner and interdisciplinary artist from Botswana. And Daaimah Mubashshir is a playwright and director whose work was commissioned by the Guthrie Theater and 3 Hole Press. She is the artistic director of {EDAP}, which produces moving images, texts and performances to provide audiences with a kinetic experience of black bodies freeing themselves from the slavery of our past.
